5 Fun Mardi Gras Ideas for Your Elderly Loved One

Mardi Gras celebrations take place in many cities across the United States. Regardless of where you live, you can encourage your senior loved one to be a part of the festivities and help him or her make these simple but fun crafts and snacks.

1. String Mardi Gras Beads

Green, gold, and purple beads are traditional. String beads together and makes necklaces or bracelets. Sacramento senior care experts suggest creating coasters by fastening a strand of beads onto plastic canvas with fabric glue or needle and thread.

2. Make a Mardi Gras Wreath

A wreath needs eight party masks, in any colors your loved one chooses. You can create a wreath design by attaching the ends of the masks together. Decorate individual masks with beads and glitter, attach string to the backs of the wreath, hang it, and enjoy.

3. Create a Festive Centerpiece

Start this project with two or three bottles painted silver, using acrylic paint after removing the labels. Bottles of different heights can create an eye-catching display. Drizzle each bottle with a single Mardi Gras color and, in a different color, create felt fleur-de-lis for the front of each bottle. Attach a party mask to a dowel for each bottle, accent each mask with a crown in contrasting colors, and finish the display by hanging colorful beads at the end of each mask.

4. Bake French Vanilla Cupcakes

Perhaps your elderly family member enjoys being in the kitchen. In this case, consider making festive cupcakes with your loved one, either from scratch or a box mix. Don’t forget to decorate the cupcakes with colorful piped frosting and candies.

5. Paint Decorative Nails

Have an all-girls salon day and paint your loved one’s nails in green, gold, and purple. The family artist can embellish nails with miniature fleur-de-lis designs in a contrasting color or make bead-like patterns with a quick dip of the brush.
